Panel evidence

Prominence evidence — group-b

A working document. It is one of the documents the site is built from, published as it is written for anyone checking the work, and it uses the project's own shorthand. The plain account of the same material is on the home page.

Prominence evidence — group-b

Searched 2026-09-30. A note on the tools first: the search tool will not filter by nytimes.com, theguardian.com, wired.com, theatlantic.com, newyorker.com, wsj.com or newscientist.com, and the fetch tool cannot open those sites (or vanityfair.com or independent.co.uk). So pieces in those outlets are either "seen in search result" or reached through a reprint copy, and I say which.

Bylined pieces. Three people below (Russell, Marcus, Brooks) each rely on one piece they wrote or co-wrote themselves in a national outlet. The brief says a person is "named" when "quoted, profiled or cited"; a byline is none of those exactly, so whoever runs the panel rule should decide whether a byline counts. Each person's verdict line says which item it is. If bylines don't count, each of those three has two qualifying pieces, not three.

Gary Marcus

Verdict: passes (if bylines count: item 3 is his own op-ed; items 1 and 2 are in the same outlet)

  1. 2015-12-17 | MIT Technology Review | "Can This Man Make AI More Human?" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2015/12/17/164285/can-this-man-make-ai-more-human/ | fetched | Profile of Marcus (New York University psychology professor, founder of Geometric Intelligence) and his argument that deep learning is limited and machines must learn more like children.
  2. 2017-03-29 | MIT Technology Review | "Is Artificial Intelligence Stuck in A Rut?" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2017/03/29/152884/is-artificial-intelligence-stuck-in-a-rut/ | fetched | Quotes Marcus ("former head of Uber's AI Lab", New York University professor) arguing that AI progress is stalling; Ilya Sutskever is quoted taking the other side.
  3. 2017-07-29 | New York Times (opinion) | "Artificial Intelligence Is Stuck. Here's How to Move It Forward" | URL not confirmed (nytimes.com cannot be searched or fetched) | seen in search result | Written by Marcus. Argues that AI is "colossally hyped" and still has a long way to go. Andrew Ng

Verdict: passes (two outlets: Fortune twice, MIT Technology Review once)

  1. 2016-03-09 | Fortune | "The Google of China Says Robots Will Take Your Job" | https://www.fortune.com/2016/03/09/baidu-robots-ai | fetched | Ng ("chief scientist at Chinese Web giant Baidu") speaking at a conference about AI taking jobs. Floats a basic income or paying people to study.
  2. 2017-01-05 | Fortune | "Yes, AI Will Kill Jobs. Humans Will Dream Up Better Ones" | https://fortune.com/2017/01/05/andrew-ng-brainstormtech-ces/ | fetched | Ng (leader of Baidu's AI research unit, Google Brain co-founder) on where AI is heading, jobs lost to it, and companies needing a chief AI officer.
  3. 2017-11-07 | MIT Technology Review | "Andrew Ng Wants a New 'New Deal' to Combat Job Automation" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2017/11/07/241739/andrew-ng-wants-a-new-new-deal-to-combat-job-automation/ | fetched | Ng (former Baidu AI head, creator of Google Brain) proposes paying workers displaced by AI to retrain. Also found but not used: his well-known 2015 "overpopulation on Mars" remark was reported by The Register (2015-03-19), a UK technology site that isn't on the list of national outlets. Quote Investigator also cites a Wired piece, "Andrew Ng: Why 'Deep Learning' Is a Mandate for Humans, Not Just Machines" (2015-05-05), whose URL I couldn't confirm. Queries: Andrew Ng "superintelligence" "overpopulation on Mars" 2015; "Andrew Ng" Baidu artificial intelligence jobs future 2016 Wall Street Journal OR Forbes OR "MIT Technology Review"; "Andrew Ng" "new electricity" artificial intelligence 2017 Fortune OR Forbes OR CNBC OR Bloomberg; "Andrew Ng" fears of evil AI distraction 2015 Wired OR "MIT Technology Review" OR Guardian; Wired "Andrew Ng: Why 'Deep Learning' Is a Mandate for Humans, Not Just Machines"; "Andrew Ng" artificial intelligence jobs automation 2016 interview Harvard Business Review OR Atlantic OR "Wall Street Journal" OR Time (plus one domain-filtered search that the tool rejected)

Stuart Russell

Verdict: passes (if bylines count: item 1 is an opinion piece he co-wrote; three different outlets)

  1. 2014-05-01 | The Independent | "Stephen Hawking: 'Transcendence looks at the implications of artificial intelligence — but are we taking AI seriously enough?'" | http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/stephen-hawking-transcendence-looks-at-the-implications-of-artificial-intelligence--but-are-we-taking-ai-seriously-enough-9313474.html | reprint fetched (independent.co.uk cannot be fetched; the URL, date and authors come from a reprint at https://www.geneticsandsociety.org/article/stephen-hawking-transcendence-looks-implications-artificial-intelligence-are-we-taking-ai) | Russell co-wrote it with Stephen Hawking, Max Tegmark and Frank Wilczek. It warns that dismissing superintelligent machines as science fiction could be humanity's worst mistake.
  2. 2015-04-21 | Wired (reprint of a Quanta Magazine piece) | "This Artificial Intelligence Pioneer Has a Few Concerns" (Quanta title: "Concerns of an Artificial Intelligence Pioneer") | Quanta original: https://www.quantamagazine.org/artificial-intelligence-aligned-with-human-values-qa-with-stuart-russell-20150421/ ; Wired URL not confirmed | Quanta original fetched (its footer confirms "This article was reprinted on Wired.com"); the Wired copy was seen in search result | Question-and-answer interview with Russell on keeping smarter-than-human AI in line with human values. Quanta alone may not count as a national outlet; it qualifies here because Wired reprinted it.
  3. 2017-11-21 | Fox News | "UC Berkeley professor's 'slaughterbots' video on killer drones goes viral" | https://foxnews.com/tech/uc-berkeley-professors-slaughterbots-video-on-killer-drones-goes-viral.print | fetched | About Russell's short film warning of AI-driven autonomous weapons (drones that choose and kill targets themselves); Russell features throughout. Not used: a Guardian interview where Russell says AI experts are "spooked" turned out to be from 2021, too late. Queries: Stuart Russell artificial intelligence risk 2015 Guardian OR "New Scientist" OR Atlantic; Guardian 2015 "Stuart Russell" AI experts spooked atomic bomb; Quanta Magazine 2015 "Stuart Russell" artificial intelligence human values interview; "Stuart Russell" artificial intelligence 2016 OR 2017 Vanity Fair OR "The Economist" OR CNN OR NPR robots threat; wired.com 2015 "Concerns of an Artificial Intelligence Pioneer" Stuart Russell; Scientific American 2016 "Should We Fear Supersmart Robots" Stuart Russell; "Stuart Russell" Berkeley AI killer robots 2015 OR 2016 Washington Post OR "New York Times" OR BBC; "Stuart Russell" slaughterbots November 2017 Guardian ban killer robots urgently needed; "Stuart Russell" 2016 artificial intelligence "human-compatible" center Berkeley launch news; theguardian.com "Stuart Russell" artificial intelligence 2017; technologyreview.com "Stuart Russell" AI 2015 OR 2016 OR 2017; "Stuart Russell" artificial intelligence superintelligence 2015 New York Times Markoff OR Overbye; Independent May 2014 Hawking Russell Tegmark Wilczek "Transcendence looks at the implications of artificial intelligence" (over the 6-search budget, because several leads came back dated too late or not national)

Rodney Brooks

Verdict: passes (if bylines count: item 3 is his own essay; two outlets)

  1. 2015-10-06 | MIT Technology Review | "Can We Shape the Robot Revolution?" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2015/10/06/165915/can-we-shape-the-robot-revolution/ | fetched | Reports Brooks (MIT professor emeritus, iRobot co-founder) warning at an MIT conference that robots and AI will disrupt work over the coming decades.
  2. 2016-04-18 | ABC (Australia) News | "Adelaide robotics pioneer says Terminator-like takeover unlikely" | https://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-04-18/adelaide-robotic-pioneer-prof-rodney-brooks-thoughts-on-ai/7334250 | fetched | Profile of Brooks, called "the father of modern artificial intelligence". He plays down fears of an AI takeover: "relax is my message."
  3. 2017-10-06 | MIT Technology Review | "The Seven Deadly Sins of AI Predictions" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2017/10/06/241837/the-seven-deadly-sins-of-ai-predictions/ | fetched | Essay by Brooks, identified as former director of MIT's AI lab, on common mistakes in predicting where AI is going. Elon Musk

Verdict: passes (three different outlets)

  1. 2014-08-04 | NBC News | "Artificial Intelligence Has Elon Musk Deeply Concerned" | https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/wbna55795017 | fetched | Musk (founder of Tesla and SpaceX) warns AI is "potentially more dangerous than nukes" and that humans may be "the biological boot loader for digital superintelligence".
  2. 2014-10-27 | Fortune | "Elon Musk warns artificial intelligence is like 'summoning the demon'" | https://fortune.com/2014/10/27/elon-musk-warns-artificial-intelligence-is-like-summoning-the-demon | fetched | Reports Musk's remarks at an MIT event calling AI possibly humanity's "biggest existential threat".
  3. 2017-07-17 | NPR | "Elon Musk Warns Governors: Artificial Intelligence Poses 'Existential Risk'" | https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/07/17/537686649/elon-musk-warns-governors-artificial-intelligence-poses-existential-risk | seen in search result (fetch timed out; the same story is on several NPR member-station sites) | Musk tells the National Governors Association that AI is "a fundamental existential risk for human civilization". Also seen: Vanity Fair, "Elon Musk's Billion-Dollar Crusade to Stop the A.I. Apocalypse" by Maureen Dowd (2017). I couldn't confirm its URL or exact date. Queries: Elon Musk "summoning the demon" artificial intelligence October 2014 Washington Post; NPR July 2017 Elon Musk governors artificial intelligence existential risk; vanityfair.com 2017 Elon Musk billion-dollar crusade stop A.I. apocalypse Dowd; Guardian "Elon Musk: artificial intelligence is our biggest existential threat" 2014; Vanity Fair Maureen Dowd "Elon Musk's Billion-Dollar Crusade to Stop the A.I. Apocalypse" Stuart Russell

Ilya Sutskever

Verdict: unclear (one piece fetched and confirmed; two more seen in search results, where his naming is strongly suggested but not confirmed)

  1. 2017-03-29 | MIT Technology Review | "Is Artificial Intelligence Stuck in A Rut?" | https://www.technologyreview.com/2017/03/29/152884/is-artificial-intelligence-stuck-in-a-rut/ | fetched | Quotes Sutskever (research director of OpenAI) arguing that AI progress is not stalling, against Gary Marcus.
  2. 2016-04 (day not confirmed) | Wired | "Inside OpenAI, Elon Musk's Wild Plan to Set Artificial Intelligence Free" | Wired URL not confirmed; seen through an aggregator copy at https://tagteam.harvard.edu/hub_feeds/928/feed_items/2171510 (that copy returned an error when fetched) | seen in search result | The search summary describes Sutskever's recruitment to and role at OpenAI, a lab founded over worries about where AI is heading. I couldn't confirm the text names him.
  3. 2015-12 (day not confirmed; OpenAI launched 2015-12-11) | New York Times | "Artificial-Intelligence Research Center Is Founded by Silicon Valley Investors" (John Markoff) | URL not confirmed; a trade reprint at https://cacmb4.acm.org/careers/195455-artificial-intelligence-research-center-is-founded-by-silicon-valley-investors/fulltext returned an error when fetched | seen in search result | About the founding of OpenAI to build AI that benefits humanity. The search result didn't show Sutskever's name in the text. Queries: Wired 2016 "Inside OpenAI" Elon Musk wild plan set artificial intelligence free Sutskever; "Ilya Sutskever" OpenAI December 2015 research director New York Times OR Guardian OR Bloomberg OR Fortune launch artificial intelligence; "Sutskever" OpenAI 2016 OR 2017 artificial general intelligence MIT Technology Review OR Bloomberg OR "New York Times" Metz; "Ilya Sutskever" 2016 OR 2017 interview AI future Wired OR Forbes OR Fortune OR "New Scientist" OR Economist; Markoff December 2015 "Artificial-Intelligence Research Center Is Founded by Silicon Valley Investors" Sutskever; "Ilya Sutskever" said 2015 OpenAI nonprofit "research director" quote news article Markoff OR Metz OR Clark Bloomberg; Cade Metz Wired December 2015 "Elon Musk's Billion-Dollar AI Plan Is About Far More Than Saving the World" Sutskever Suggested next step: someone with access to Wired or the New York Times (or a library database) checks items 2 and 3 for his name. Wired's December 2015 piece "Elon Musk's Billion-Dollar AI Plan Is About Far More Than Saving the World" (Cade Metz) is another likely candidate.

François Chollet

Verdict: fails (as searched) No qualifying piece found. Before 2018 his public writing on where AI is going was on his own channels (his Medium essay "The Impossibility of Intelligence Explosion", 2017-11-27) or in non-national outlets (a DataCamp interview, 2017-12-18). Neither counts. Queries: "François Chollet" Keras Google artificial intelligence 2016 OR 2017 Wired OR Forbes OR "MIT Technology Review" OR Guardian intelligence explosion; "Chollet" "impossibility of intelligence explosion" 2017 coverage OR "Francois Chollet" quoted 2017 AI hype; "Francois Chollet" Google researcher said artificial intelligence 2016 OR 2017 article Wired OR Bloomberg OR "The Verge" OR Quartz OR Forbes deep learning future

Melanie Mitchell

Verdict: fails (as searched) No qualifying piece found. Her national-outlet writing on AI's future seems to start in 2018 (New York Times opinion piece) and 2019 (her book). One possible lead I couldn't confirm: The Atlantic's November 2013 profile of her former advisor Douglas Hofstadter, "The Man Who Would Teach Machines to Think" (James Somers). It probably discusses the analogy-making program they built together (Copycat), but I couldn't confirm that it names her. Even if it does, it's only one piece. Queries: "Melanie Mitchell" Portland State artificial intelligence 2014 OR 2015 OR 2016 OR 2017 quoted New York Times OR Atlantic OR Wired OR "Scientific American" OR NPR; Atlantic 2013 "The Man Who Would Teach Machines to Think" Hofstadter "Melanie Mitchell"; "Melanie Mitchell" Santa Fe Institute artificial intelligence superintelligence Singularity 2015 OR 2016 OR 2017 news; "Melanie Mitchell" Copycat Hofstadter Atlantic Somers "Mitchell"; "Melanie Mitchell" artificial intelligence 2017 OR 2016 Quanta OR "New Scientist" OR "MIT Technology Review" OR Guardian AI limits; "Melanie Mitchell" "Complexity: A Guided Tour" OR "Portland State" robots artificial intelligence interview 2009..2017 newspaper

Ernest Davis

Verdict: fails (as searched) No piece by others quoting him on AI's future was found. His own list of writing for general readers (https://cs.nyu.edu/~ed1/generalWriting.html, fetched) shows pieces co-written with Gary Marcus in national outlets, but none clearly about where AI is going:

His AI-future writing from this period appeared in a trade outlet ("The Singularity and the State of the Art in Artificial Intelligence", ACM Ubiquity, October 2014). He also appeared in a PBS Digital Studios video, "The Rise of Artificial Intelligence" (July 2013, on YouTube), which is a video, not an article. Even counted generously, that's one qualifying item at most. Queries: "Ernest Davis" NYU artificial intelligence common sense; "Ernest Davis" Winograd Schema Challenge 2016 Turing test chatbots MIT Technology Review OR Wired OR "New Scientist"; "Gary Marcus" "Ernest Davis" New Yorker OR "New York Times" 2014 OR 2015 OR 2016 artificial intelligence; "Ernest Davis" "New York University" computer scientist quoted artificial intelligence 2015 OR 2016 OR 2017 Markoff OR Wired OR "Scientific American"
